Paris Basketball: Iverson Veer

Welcome to the 14th issue of Hoops Beyond the Huddle

This week we’re taking a look at the top EuroCup team, Paris Basketball. Currently sitting at first place with a record of 17-1, Paris has been running through the competition with a very high pace style of the game. This set comes from week 25 of EuroCup action.

Watch the clip and we will break it down below.

There are definitions for all the actions explained in this newsletter, at the bottom. All words that are bolded in black can be found.

This action is called Iverson Veer.

This set starts off in a typical Iverson formation. The 1 at the top, and 2 cutting from wing to wing with posts screens at elbows, out of a horns alignment. The 4 sets the first elbow screen and the 5 sets the second.

Typically, the 3 cuts from wing to the corner. However, as this was the first play off the jump ball, so it was more natural for the 3 to go straight to the corner. The ball is swung to the cutter at the wing (action 1).

action 1

The 4 follows and sets a empty wing PnR with the 2. This action is usually run live, but in this scenario, it’s utilized as a decoy to get the shot they want. The 5 fills the position on the elbow where the 4 was. The 2 probes the defender of the 1 before swinging the ball back (action 2).

action 2

The 5 hops into a step up screen with the 1. The defender of the 5 is already anticipating the help with the ball handler as he is trailing. The 5 then sets a veer screen for the 2.

After the 2 swung the ball to the 1, he took a few steps away from the ball. This is to make his defender think he is now out of the play, as well as give him space to come off the veer screen. The 1 passes the ball to the 2 who starts the game off with a wide open 3. Perfect execution (action 3).

action 3
