Baskonia: Iverson Post Slip

Welcome to the eighth issue of Hoops Beyond the Huddle!
This week we are looking at a quick hitter from Baskonia - a Spanish team making a push for top 6 in the Euroleague.
Watch the clip and we will break it down below.
There are definitions for all the actions explained in this newsletter, at the bottom. All words that are bolded in black can be found.
This set is called Iverson Post Slip.
This set was run early in the game by Baskonia to get them a few quick points on the board. With perfect execution, they got an uncontested shot under the rim. The action starts with the 3 running an Iverson cut off screens from the 5 and the 4. The 1 passes to the 3 on the wing (action 1).
As the 3 is about to receive the entry pass, the 2 anticipates the pass and sets a cross screen for the 5 in the middle of the paint for the post up. The 5 receives the post entry outside the low block (action 2). The 1 clears out after passing the ball.

action 1 // action 2
As the 5 is going off the cross screen, the 4 steps to the foul line to set a brush screen for the 2. The 2 moves past the screen as if he were to receive the pass at the top of the key (action 3).
Once the 2 notices the 5 has the ball in the low post, he cuts hard to the basket off the back screen set by the 4. The 5 throws the pass to the cutter who gets an easy lay in (action 4).

action 3 // action 4
Point of Emphasizes:
This look was as open as it was due to Baskonia’s ability to be patient and properly set up the action. When the 2 comes off the brush screen, he does so carefully and with intent to get the ball. This sells the cut to his defender, who cheats over the screen to anticipate him getting the ball. At this point, the 2 cuts back of the screen from the 4 and his defender is out of the picture.
Key Terms & Definitions:
Iverson: cut from wing to wing with post setting screen
Cross Screen: off ball screen for player to cut horizontally towards ball
Back Screen: off ball screen for player to cut to basket
Brush Screen/Cut: interference cut that occupies defender
Wing: location on court where foul line extended meets 3 point line
Low Block: location on court that is closest to the rim but outside the key (painted rectangle)
That’s this week’s playbook breakdown! Try it out in one of your upcoming games to start a quarter, and let me know how it goes for your team. I will start featuring some coaches who submit clips of their teams executing these sets! Stay tuned.
