Fenerbahce: Veer Stagger

Hoops Beyond the Huddle Vol. 23

Welcome to the 23rd issue of Hoops Beyond the Huddle!

This week we’re taking a look at a quick hitter used to get an open 3 for a shooter to start the second half. This play comes from game 1 of Playoff C between Fenerbahce vs Monaco.

Watch the clip and we will break it down below.

There are definitions for all the actions explained in this newsletter, at the bottom. All words that are bolded in black can be found.

This action is called Veer Stagger.

This set starts off with the 2 bringing the ball up the court. The 1 in the strong side corner comes up for a dribble handoff (DHO) with the 2. On the weak side, the 4 sets a pin down screen on the 3. The 1 swings the ball to the 3 (action 1).

After receiving the ball, the 3 pitches the ball back to the 1 and continues cutting away. The 1 and 4 hold the corners (action 2).

The 3 sets a screen for the 2 in the corner. The 5 comes up from the low block to set a step up screen for the 1 (action 3).

After setting the screen on the ball, instead of rolling the 5 slips out and sets a veer screen for the 2. This screen is also the second of the stagger screen (action 4).
